Call and Response.....

I drove to Kripalu on Saturday to attend the Krishna Das concert.  This evening of Kirtan – Call and Response devotional chanting - was deeply moving.   The few times my eyes were open I looked around and watched as people of all ages, backgrounds and beliefs responded to Krishna Das’ Calls.  These responses were as varied as the people attending:  some sat quietly and unmoving, some were dancing, and most responded back with their voices.   All of these responses were unique and all of them contributed to the sweetness of the sound that filled the space we were in.

I was deeply moved feeling great love and joy flowing inside and all around me - there were many moments when I was experiencing oneness with the universe.  In that place I also felt the sadness of friends who are suffering and stuck, and prayed that they might have an experience of this pure healing love.

On the way home I thought about how again and again we are called and given the opportunity to enter our hearts through a “CALL”  - disguised as a sunrise, sunset, the moon, a flower, illness, pain, a book, friend, poem,  or song…sparks of inspiration….AND how often we do not RESPOND.  We are too busy, angry, sad, depressed, hurt, triggered….. and so we respond by turning away.

Life is sweeter and fuller when we respond to these calls.  Each time we respond we are practicing love.  We are acknowledging our divine presence and we are strengthening our capacity to know that all of the answers we seek are within our open hearts…there is “nowhere else to turn”.

My Foolish Heart - by Krishna Das
My foolish heart
Why do you weep?
You throw yourself away again
Now you cry yourself to sleep.
Cry yourself to sleep...

My foolish heart
When will you learn?
You are the eyes of the world
And there’s nowhere else to turn.
Nowhere else to turn...

Saprema, (with divine love)

From the Radiance Sutras
Lorin Roche

Worship does not mean offering flowers.
It means offering your heart
To the vast mystery
Of the universe.

It means letting your heart pulse
With the life of the universe
Without thought and without reservation.

It means being so in love
That you are
Willing to dissolve
And be recreated in every moment.
